All About Standards-Based Report Cards

Since teachers assess student-performance in alignment with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and the Mount Olive Township Public School elementary curricula, our standards-based report card communicates student-progress toward meeting learning standards that are specific to each grade-level and subject area.  Standards-based report cards are meant to provide more consistency among teachers because all students are evaluated on the same grade-appropriate skills.  Therefore, standards-based grading provides parents and students with a clear understanding of what is expected at each grade-level and to see exactly which skills and knowledge they have learned.  With this understanding, parents are better able to guide and support their child and assist him/her to succeed and grow.  Lastly, the revised report card intends to provide meaningful feedback about student-growth in both an academic and social-emotional context.

WHAT IS STANDARDS-BASED GRADE REPORTING?

A standards-based grade reporting system is designed to inform parents about their child’s progress towards achieving specific learning standards. The New Jersey Student Learning Standards establish high and challenging performance expectations for all students. They not only describe what students .They also serve as the basis for the Mount Olive Township School District instruction and assessment model.

The Standards-Based Report Card:

  • highlights most important student skills in each subject area and grade-level

  • assesses “how well a child has moved towards meeting the standards” within a subject area

  • identifies areas of student strength and weakness to better inform instruction

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STANDARDS-BASED REPORT CARD?

This report card allows parents and students to understand more clearly what is expected at each grade-level.  With this understanding, parents will be better able to guide and support their child to be successful in a rigorous academic program.

HOW IS THIS REPORT CARD DIFFERENT?

  • indicators for content areas are specified each marking period (trimester)

  • a benchmark-based assessment rubric scale is used

  • students are assessed based on grade-level standards

  • each grade-level has its own unique report card
